Every story page carries: a full retelling, a short version, the moral stated plainly, an explanation of the moral for a grown-up, discussion questions, a vocabulary list, an age band, a reading time and a scariness rating. 18 of them can also be listened to: a read-aloud narration (MP3, with a player at the top of the story page and captions), for the full story and/or the short version. Catalogue: 439 tales cleared for publication, 18 published so far. ## Songs with the Dragon Original songs for toddlers, preschoolers and babies, led by our mascot the Dragon: a small, round, sea-mint dragon with a cream tummy, apricot wings and a yellow bow on its tail, who learns new things alongside children. It never breathes fire (only gentle cloud puffs). Every song page has: what the song teaches and how grown-ups can use it, the dance moves step by step with stills from the video, the full lyrics as sung, a 30-second sample, an FAQ, and for the baby and health songs a "For grown-ups" note with official sources (NHS, AAP, CDC, WHO, FDA). For example https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/cinderella.md, and for one part of a story https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/cinderella/moral.md (the parts are full, short, moral, characters and moments). ## Rights All tales are public domain worldwide. We publish only titles that are clear in both the United States and the EU/UK, with no royalty obligation and no trademark overlay. The retellings are new text, written from the tale rather than copied from any translation. The stories on this site are new retellings of public-domain tales, written from scratch for reading aloud. The songs are original songs and the lyrics are original, written by us for the dragon and the children who sing along. The illustrations, the song videos, the story narrations and the dragon mascot are our own, made in our own style. ## Index - [Cinderella](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/cinderella) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/cinderella.md)) A girl is made to sleep in the ashes by her stepmother and stepsisters while they go to the ball. With help from her godmother she gets one night out, one beautiful dress, and one warning: be home by midnight. She very nearly is. Moral: Being kind when nobody is watching is still worth it. Audio: full story 7 min, short version 2 min - [Snow White](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/snow-white) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/snow-white.md)) A queen owns a mirror that cannot lie, and one morning it gives her an answer she does not want. Her stepdaughter is sent into the forest to be got rid of, finds a cottage belonging to seven miners, and is warned three times not to open the door. She opens it three times. Moral: Someone who keeps asking whether they are good enough will never believe the answer. Audio: full story 8 min, short version 2 min - [The Three Little Pigs](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/the-three-little-pigs) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/the-three-little-pigs.md)) Three pig brothers leave home to build houses of their own. Two of them hurry, building with straw and sticks so they can go and play. The third takes his time and builds with brick. When a hungry wolf comes knocking, only one house is still standing, and all three brothers learn why it pays to do a job properly. Moral: Take the time to do a job properly, and it will keep you safe when things get hard. Audio: full story 6 min, short version 2 min - [Rapunzel](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/rapunzel) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/rapunzel.md)) A man steals lettuce from a witch's garden for his pregnant wife, and pays for it with the baby. The girl grows up alone in a tower with no door and no stairs, and does not know that either of those things is strange, until somebody who is not the witch calls up from the bottom. Moral: You cannot miss what nobody has told you about, and that is exactly why somebody should tell you. Audio: full story 8 min, short version 2 min - [Little Red Riding Hood](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/little-red-riding-hood) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/little-red-riding-hood.md)) A girl in a red hood takes a basket to her grandmother's cottage and meets a wolf on the path who asks exactly the right questions. He gets there first. What follows is the most famous conversation in any fairy tale, and it does not end the way she expects. Moral: When something feels wrong, say so out loud, even if you cannot explain why. Audio: full story 5 min, short version 2 min - [Sleeping Beauty](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/sleeping-beauty) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/sleeping-beauty.md)) A fairy nobody remembered to invite curses a newborn princess to die on a spindle. A younger fairy, hiding behind the curtain with her gift still unspent, cannot undo it and argues it down to a hundred years of sleep instead. In Perrault's original there is no kiss at the end. The hundred years is simply up. Moral: The person you forget to invite is still somebody. Audio: full story 8 min, short version 2 min - [Goldilocks and the Three Bears](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/goldilocks-and-the-three-bears) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/goldilocks-and-the-three-bears.md)) Three bears go out for a walk while their porridge cools. A girl called Goldilocks finds their door open and lets herself in, and tries everything in the house until she finds the one that suits her. Then she falls asleep, and they come home. Moral: Other people's things are still theirs even when they are not there. Audio: full story 6 min, short version 2 min - [Hansel and Gretel](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/hansel-and-gretel) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/hansel-and-gretel.md)) Two children are taken into the wood and left there. The first time, Hansel has filled his pockets with pebbles. The second time he only has bread, and birds eat it. Then they find a house made of gingerbread, and the old woman inside is very pleased to see them. Moral: When one of you runs out of ideas, it is the other one's turn. Audio: full story 9 min, short version 2 min - [Jack and the Beanstalk](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/jack-and-the-beanstalk) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/jack-and-the-beanstalk.md)) Jack is sent to sell the last cow and comes home with five beans. His mother throws them out of the window. In the morning there is a beanstalk going up through the clouds, and Jack, who has never once thought a thing through, starts climbing. Moral: Knowing when to stop is a different skill from being brave, and it is the harder one. Audio: full story 8 min, short version 2 min - [The Gingerbread Man](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/the-gingerbread-man) ([markdown](https://dragonkidsland.com/stories/the-gingerbread-man.md)) A little old woman bakes a gingerbread man and forgets about the time. He sits up, gets out through a propped-open door, and outruns everybody who chases him: the old woman, the old man, a cow, a horse and a barn full of threshers. Then he reaches a river, and a fox who has been sitting quite still offers him a lift. Moral: The one who catches you is rarely the one running behind you. She cannot. A small man can, and his price goes up each night until it is her first child. The tale everybody remembers as being about a wicked imp is really about the two men who never face any consequences at all. Moral: Be careful what you say to fill a silence. He survives a marsh, a very opinionated cat and hen, and a winter that nearly kills him. At the end he flies at a flock of swans expecting to be killed for daring to come near, and they welcome him, and only then does he look down and see what he is. Moral: You are not what the duckyard says you are. Moral: Do the work while you can, because winter does not ask whether you are ready. His minister cannot see it. Nor can the emperor. Moral: If a thing is not there, you are allowed to say so.
