There was a girl who did all the work in her house while her stepmother and two stepsisters did none of it. At the end of each day the only warm place left for her was the hearth, so she slept in the ashes, and they called her Cinderella and thought it was funny.
When the prince invited every young woman in the kingdom to a ball, Cinderella spent three days getting her stepsisters ready and was left behind. She sat down in the ashes and cried.
Then her godmother arrived, turned a pumpkin into a carriage, six mice into horses, and Cinderella's grey dress into something that moved like water. She gave her a pair of glass slippers and one rule: be out of the palace before midnight finishes striking.
At the ball the prince would not dance with anybody else. Her own stepsisters stood beside her and did not know her. Then the clock began to strike, and Cinderella ran, and one glass slipper stayed behind on the staircase.
The prince searched the whole kingdom with it. When he reached her house the stepsisters pushed and curled their toes and it would not fit. Then Cinderella came to the kitchen door with ash in her hair, sat down, put the slipper on easily, and took the other one out of her apron pocket.
And when she went to the palace, she took her stepsisters with her.
