Three bears made porridge and it was too hot, so they went for a walk and left the door open.

A girl called Goldilocks came through the wood, knocked, got no answer, and went in anyway.

She tried the great big bowl and it was too hot. She tried the middle bowl and it was too cold. She tried the little bowl and it was exactly right, and she ate all of it.

She tried the great big chair and it was too hard. The middle chair was too soft. The little chair fitted her perfectly, and then it broke straight through and she landed on the floor.

Upstairs there were three beds, and the little one was exactly right, and she fell fast asleep in it.

Then the bears came home. Somebody had been eating their porridge. Somebody had been sitting in their chairs, and the little one was broken right through, and nobody said anything for a moment because that was the one that could not be mended.

Then they went upstairs, and the Little Bear squeaked that somebody had been lying in his bed and she was still there.

Goldilocks woke up, sat straight up, and went red to the ears. "Was that your chair?" she said.

Then she ran all the way home. But three days later she came back, with a small wooden stool she had made, and stood in the doorway not knowing what to say.
