Jack was sent to sell the last cow and came back with five beans. His mother threw them out of the window and sent him to bed with no supper.

In the morning there was a beanstalk filling the garden and going up past the clouds, and Jack was climbing it before she woke.

At the top was a house where everything was too big. The giant's wife said her husband ate boys. Jack said he had not eaten since yesterday, and she gave him bread and cheese, and then hid him in the oven when the house began to shake.

The giant said FEE-FI-FO-FUM. Then he called for his hen, and it laid four eggs of solid gold, and he fell asleep. Jack took the hen and climbed down.

They mended the roof and bought a cow and ate properly for the first time in two years. And then Jack climbed up again, and took two bags of gold.

They should have stopped there. Everyone agrees, including Jack.

The third time the giant's wife did not speak to him at all. She stood aside and pointed at the copper. That morning the giant brought out a golden harp that played by itself, and fell asleep listening to it.

Jack picked it up. And the harp said, "MASTER."

He went down that beanstalk faster than was sensible with a giant on it above him, and shouted for the axe, and his mother was already coming out with it.
