A miller could not bear a silence, so he told the king that his daughter could spin straw into gold. She could not. That did not matter, because the king believed him.

She was locked in a room with a heap of straw and told that if it was not gold by morning she would be killed.

A small man appeared who had not come through the door. He spun the straw for a glass necklace. The next night, for a glass ring. On the third night she had nothing left, so he asked for her first child instead, and she was seventeen and locked in and had been threatened with death three nights running, and she said yes.

The king married her. A year later she had a son, and she had genuinely forgotten.

The small man came for him. She offered him the entire treasury and he said a living thing was worth more than all the gold in the kingdom. Then he gave her three days to guess his name.

A rider found a little house at the edge of a wood, and a small man hopping round a fire, singing his own name because he was pleased with it.

When she said it he did not scream. He said somebody had told her, and that it was not fair, and he walked out and never came back.
