The King

supporting · human · the parent who tries everything

A father who does absolutely everything within his power and is not helped by any of it.

How we meet them

Unable to think of anything grand enough to mark the birth of a child he waited a very long time for.

Personality

Well meaning, decisive, and completely outmatched.

What they want

To prevent the one thing that has been declared unpreventable.

How they change

From a father who cannot think of a gesture big enough, to a king who destroys every spinning wheel in his country, to a man who accepts the fairies were right and gives orders to let his daughter sleep in peace.

How they speak

Practical instructions, delivered at volume, none of which work.

How the story treats them

The kingdom obeys him instantly and the story treats his great decree as beside the point, which is the joke.

One surprising thing

He has every spinning wheel in the country broken and burned, and the story notes that this made no difference whatsoever. The spindle that gets her belonged to an old woman who had simply not been told.

If they were real today

He would childproof the entire house and leave the front gate open.

Key moments

  1. One more place

Faced with a fairy he has no gold case for, he does the only thing he can think of and has an ordinary plate laid, which is both polite and catastrophic.

  2. Burn all of them

He goes home and orders every spinning wheel in the kingdom broken and burned, and it is obeyed, and it is useless.

Who they know

  • The Old Fairyneighbour

He did not snub her. He simply did not think of her, which turns out to be worse.
