The Seventh Fairy

helper · fairy · the one who plans ahead

The youngest of the seven, who saw what was coming and quietly went and stood behind a curtain.

How we meet them

Getting up from the table in the middle of dinner and leaving, which looks rude and is the most useful thing anybody does all evening.

Personality

Watchful, practical, and thinking about the following morning while everybody else is at dinner.

What they want

To make sure somebody still has something left to give after the damage is done.

How they change

From the youngest guest at the table, to the only one who leaves it, to the person who quietly decides what the next hundred years will be like for everybody in the building.

How they speak

Plainly, and mostly about limits. She is careful to say what she cannot do before she says what she can.

How the story treats them

Nobody notices her leave and nobody thanks her afterwards. The kingdom credits the burning of the spinning wheels, which achieved nothing.

One surprising thing

She cannot undo another fairy's work, and the story is strict about it. She does not cancel the curse. She argues it down, which is a completely different kind of magic.

If they were real today

She would be the one who read the terms and conditions.

Key moments

  1. Behind the curtain

She sees the old fairy look at the ordinary plate, gets up quietly, and goes and stands out of sight so that somebody will still have a gift left when the damage is done.

  2. Not death. Sleep.

She comes out from behind the curtain and says the one thing she is able to say, which is that she cannot undo it and can only make it smaller.

  3. Even her little dog

She arrives in an hour by chariot and puts the entire household to sleep exactly as it stands, down to the dogs and the fire, so the princess will not wake alone among strangers.

Who they know

  • The Old Fairyrival

The two of them never argue, and the entire plot is the argument between them.

  • The Princessguardian

She is the only person in the story who thinks about what waking up would actually be like.
