A queen wished for a daughter with skin white as snow, lips red as blood and hair black as ebony. She got one, and died within the year.

The new Queen owned a mirror that could not lie, and every morning for seven years she asked it who was fairest, and every morning it said she was. Then one day it said Snow White was.

The Queen sent a huntsman to take Snow White into the forest. An hour in, he stopped and told her to run and not come back this way.

She found a cottage with seven little beds, belonging to seven miners. They let her stay, and told her to keep the door shut for anybody.

She meant it. But the mirror told the Queen where she was, and a pedlar came with pretty laces, and Snow White had been alone since first light. The laces were pulled too tight and she went down. The dwarfs cut them that evening.

Then a comb. She knew, and she opened the door anyway, because nobody had spoken to her all day.

Then an apple, cut in half, with the old woman eating one half herself while she watched. Only one half was poisoned. The Queen had thought about it for a long time.

The dwarfs could not bring themselves to bury her, so they made a case of glass and took turns sitting with it. A prince asked to take her home, and on the way down the hill a servant tripped, and the piece of apple came out of her throat.

"You dropped me," said Snow White.
