The Wolf
antagonist · wolf
A hungry wolf from the woods nearby. More weary and theatrical than frightening, and by the end more embarrassed than dangerous.

How we meet them
As a rumour. He lives in the woods nearby and he has been hungry for a long time, and then he comes down the lane.
Personality
Persistent, dramatic, and increasingly out of breath. He performs menace rather than truly radiating it.
What they want
He is hungry, and has been for a long time.
How they change
Huffs and puffs himself into exhaustion, gets a nose full of steam, and leaves.
How they speak
Theatrically, drawing his words out, until he runs out of breath and has to sit down.
How the story treats them
Nobody in the story hates him. He is hungry, and the third house was better built than he was.
One surprising thing
He never gets a single line after the brick house. His last spoken words are wheezed, sitting on a path.
If they were real today
He would be the person who tries the same approach three times with increasing volume.
Things they say
- “Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in.”
Key moments
Little pig, little pig
He knocks and asks, very politely, to be let in. It works twice.
“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”
Until his ears went pink
He huffs and puffs at the brick house until his eyes water and he has to sit down on the path, and the house does not move one brick.
“That one is... rather well made.”
Straight back off the roof
One paw on the tiles, a puff of steam up the chimney, and he is gone into the woods and never seen in that lane again.
Who they know
Barnabyenemy
An immovable house against an unstoppable appetite. The house wins.
