What this song is about
Candle-Puff Birthday is a party song for the moment everyone gathers round the cake. Children hold up fingers to show how old they are, shout their age back in a counting game from one to six, and practise the big breath and two short puffs that blow candles out. The chorus pats knees and claps hands, so even the youngest guests can join in without knowing the words.
The Dragon arrives with a present as big as a whale and nearly makes a mistake: "Wait, little dragon! No fire on the cake!" Instead of a flame, everyone counts to three and blows one gentle whoosh. It is a light-hearted way to show that a grown-up lights the candles and the birthday child blows them out. Because the song is completely original, you can sing it at parties, in nursery and on video calls with grandparents as a cheerful extra to the traditional birthday song, with a counting game built in.
Sung and danced with the Dragon, our mascot who learns new things alongside children.

For grown-ups
A grown-up lights the candles and stays close; the child blows them out. In the video, the Dragon never uses fire near the cake or the children.
- Keep lit candles out of reach and tie back long hair and loose sleeves.
- Let the birthday child blow on their own; younger guests can puff at pretend candles on their fingers.
Questions parents ask
Is this a replacement for the traditional birthday song?
No, it is an extra one. Candle-Puff Birthday is completely original, with its own words and tune, so you can sing both: ours for the counting game and the candle puff, the traditional one for the cake.
What age is Candle-Puff Birthday for?
Ages 2 to 6. The counting verse goes from one to six so most party guests can shout their own age.
Is it suitable for a classroom birthday?
Yes. The actions are simple pats, claps and a big breath, and there is no need for real candles: children can puff at pretend candles on their fingers.
