How we meet them
Already walking, already hungry, already close to a door somebody left open. The story does not give her a reason for being in the wood, which is right.
Personality
Impulsive and entirely without malice. She does not sneak. She knocks twice, says things out loud to an empty room, and helps herself as though she has been invited.
What they want
Breakfast, and then a sit down, and then a lie down. In that order, and no further ahead than that.
How they change
Runs away, and then spends three days working herself up to coming back with something she made.
How they speak
Out loud, to nobody. She announces that the porridge is too hot in an empty house, which tells you she is not being sly.
How the story treats them
The bears are not frightening about it. The Great Big Bear's last line is an invitation, which is the whole point of this retelling.
One surprising thing
In the oldest printed version from 1837 she is not a girl at all. She is a rude old woman, and there is no apology and no coming back.
If they were real today
She would be the child who eats a biscuit off your plate while looking directly at you.
Things they say
- “Was that your chair?”
Key moments
She knocked twice
She does not sneak in. She knocks, waits, knocks again, looks in, and only then decides the open door counts as an invitation.
And then it broke
The little chair fits her perfectly, and then goes straight through underneath her, and she sits on the floor among the pieces feeling quite strange about it.
Was that your chair?
Woken by three bears, she does not scream. She sits up, looks at the smallest one's face, goes red to the ears, and asks the only question that matters.
“Was that your chair?”
Three days to work up to it
She comes back with a small wooden stool she made with her father, which is not as good as the chair was, and stands in the doorway with nothing to say.
Who they know
The Little Bearfriend
Every single thing she used was his, and he is the one who says so quietly.
The Great Big Bearneighbour
The loudest voice in the story says the kindest thing in it.
The Middle Bearneighbour
The bear who spots every single thing she did, and the only one who works out why she did it.
