How we meet them

Accepting a rabbit from a cat in boots and thanking it politely, without asking a single one of the four or five obvious questions.

Personality

Generous, credulous and extremely fond of being pleased. He is not a fool exactly. He is a man who has never in his life had a reason to check anything.

What they want

To be delighted, and to marry his daughter to somebody impressive before he has to think about it properly.

How they change

Believes everything, is never told otherwise, and remains happy for the rest of his life. The story lets him, which is its own small mercy.

How they speak

Compliments, mostly. He says thank you, he says remarkable, and he asks whose land this is, which is the only question in the story that gets four wrong answers in a row.

How the story treats them

The cat treats him as a piece of scenery that must be moved along a road. His daughter watches him being fooled and says nothing about it.

One surprising thing

He is fooled four times in one carriage ride, by four separate fields of people, every one of whom had been threatened by a cat about twenty minutes earlier.

If they were real today

He would be the man who forwards you a competition he has definitely won, and is hurt when you check it.

Things they say

  • “I am very much obliged.”
  • “A remarkable young man.”
  • “And whose land is this?”

Key moments

  1. Very much obliged

A cat in boots hands him a rabbit and credits a nobleman he has never heard of. He thanks the cat and asks nothing further, and does the same thing again every fortnight for three months.

    “I am very much obliged.”

  2. Whose land is this

He asks the same reasonable question in four different fields and receives the same rehearsed answer, and slowly begins to feel that he has not been keeping up.

    “And whose land is this?”

Who they know

  • The Catacquaintance

Three months of free rabbits and one repeated sentence, delivered by a cat in boots to a king who never thinks to check.
