The Miller's Daughter
protagonist · human · the one who pays for it
A young woman who is handed a death sentence because of something her father said at a party.
How we meet them
Being collected. She is fetched that evening, and nobody at any point asks her whether any of this is agreeable.
Personality
Steady, watchful and quietly furious in a way she never gets to express.
What they want
First to survive the night. Later, to keep her son.
How they change
From a girl who is fetched without being asked, to a woman who signs away something she cannot imagine, to a queen who spends three days doing the only thing anybody has ever let her do, which is try.
How they speak
As little as possible in front of powerful people, which is a skill she learns in about one night.
How the story treats them
Her father thinks she is a good line in a conversation. The king thinks she is a machine that produces gold. The little man is the only one who asks her a question and waits for the answer.
One surprising thing
She has no name anywhere in the Grimm text. She is the miller's daughter, then the queen, and that is all she is ever called.
If they were real today
She would be the one who gets volunteered for something in a meeting she was not invited to.
Key moments
That's a lot of straw
She is locked in with a heap of straw and a death sentence, sits down on the floor, and a voice she does not recognise states the obvious.
Nothing at all
On the third night she has nothing left to give, and says so plainly, which is what opens the door to the worst bargain in the story.
“Nothing at all.”
She had forgotten
A year of nothing happening does what a year of nothing happening does. The story is honest that she had genuinely stopped thinking about it.
Then is it Rumpelstiltskin
She has the answer before she walks in and she spends two wrong guesses enjoying it, which is the only power she is given in the entire tale.
“Then is it, Rumpelstiltskin?”
Who they know
Rumpelstiltskinrival
The only relationship in the story where both people are honest with each other.
The Millerfamily
He says one sentence about her and then vanishes from her life entirely.
The Kingrival
He threatens to kill her three times and then marries her, and the story does not treat this as strange.
The Messengerally
She sends out dozens of riders for names, and the one who saves her comes back with none.
