The Messenger
helper · human · the one who noticed
A rider who found nothing at all, and mentioned it anyway because he thought it was funny.
How we meet them
Coming back from two days' ride with an apology, because he did not find any names.
Personality
Observant, cheerful, and blessedly bad at deciding what is and is not important.
What they want
To come back with something, even if it is only a story.
How they change
From one of dozens of riders sent out with a list, to the only one who brings back something that is not a name, to the reason the queen keeps her son.
How they speak
He sings it, because that is how he remembers it.
How the story treats them
Nobody sent him to find a song. He is the only person in the story who reports something he was not asked for.
One surprising thing
The little man is not caught by magic or cleverness. He is caught because he was alone, and happy, and singing, and somebody happened to be walking past.
If they were real today
He would be the one who mentions the odd thing he saw on the way in, and it turns out to be the whole answer.
Key moments
Nothing at all, except
He reports a complete failure and then adds the detail he thought was funny, which is a little house, a fire, and a man hopping round it on one leg.
He repeated the song
He has a good memory. He sings the whole thing back, including the part where the name appears twice because its owner was pleased with it.
Who they know
She sends out dozens of riders for names, and the one who saves her comes back with none.
