The Fox
antagonist · fox · the one who sat still
Was already on the bank. Had been there for some time. Did not chase anybody.
How we meet them
Already sitting there. The story is careful to say he had been on that bank for some time.
Personality
Patient, courteous, and entirely unhurried.
What they want
Lunch, arriving on its own.
How they change
He does not have one. He is in exactly the same position at the start of his scene as at the end, and that is the point.
How they speak
Nothing but helpful observations about the depth of the water.
How the story treats them
The gingerbread man does not think about him at all, which is the entire mechanism.
One surprising thing
He never once tells the gingerbread man to do anything. He describes the water getting deeper and lets him work out the rest.
If they were real today
He would be the person who offers you a lift when you have just missed the last bus.
Key moments
You'll not get over that
His opening line is not an offer. It is an accurate statement of the problem, which is what makes the offer land.
“You'll not get over that.”
The water is getting deeper
Three moves, each one framed as concern about the water rather than as an instruction, and each one perfectly reasonable on its own.
Who they know
The Gingerbread Manrival
The only creature in the story who does not chase him is the only one who gets him.
