What this song is about

Ra-Ta-Ta-Roar! is our signature song and the Dragon's favourite dance. It is built on one simple loop that even a two-year-old can catch on the first listen: three pats on the knees for "ra-ta-ta", claws up for "roar". Then the song plays with size. First you are a teeny-tiny dragon just out of the egg, flapping your fingers and roaring like a mouse. Then a middle-size dragon with elbow wings. Then a giant one, arms out wide, stomping hard enough to wobble the clouds.

Going from small to big teaches children that their bodies can be gentle or strong on purpose, and the sleepy bridge adds a proper freeze: curl up, "shh, shh, shh", and hold still until "Wake up, dragons!". That stop-and-go is the same skill that freeze games practise, and it makes the song a reliable brain break between quiet activities. Every move works sitting down too, so it suits a classroom carpet, a rainy-day living room or a wheelchair just as well as a playground.

Sung and danced with the Dragon, our mascot who learns new things alongside children.

Learn the moves

Each step shows when it first comes up in the song. Every move works standing or sitting down.

  1. The Dragon and four children on a round stage, everyone with paws up mid-roar.
Claws up and roar: the move the whole song comes back to. (0:10 in the video)

    Step 1: Ra-ta-ta… roar!

    First at 0:10

Pat your knees three times on "ra-ta-ta", then lift both hands up like soft claws and give a friendly roar with a round mouth.

  2. Children and the Dragon stomping in place with arms out like wings.
Flap, flap, then three stomps in place. (0:17 in the video)

Step 2: Wings go flap, feet go stomp

    First at 0:16

Flap your arms like wings three times, then stomp in place three times. Start with the foot on the same side as the screen's left so you mirror the video.

  3. Everyone with hands on hips, swishing their hips; the Dragon's tail swings to the side.
Hands on hips and swish, just like a tail. (0:19 in the video)

    Step 3: Swish your tail

    First at 0:19

Hands on hips and swish side to side on every beat. On "romp!" pop your claws up with a tiny bounce.

  4. Step 4: Knee drums and claps

    First at 0:26

Drum fast on your knees (or the floor if you are sitting), clap twice, then raise your claws from chest to head to high, and roar.

  5. Everyone crouched small; the Dragon is curled inside a cracked egg shell.
Verse 1: tiny dragons hatch from the egg. (0:30 in the video)

    Step 5: Teeny-tiny dragon

    First at 0:30

Crouch down small inside your pretend egg. On "crack!" pop up, flutter your hands at your shoulders, wiggle one leg and tiptoe softly. Then a tiny, mouse-size roar.

  6. Step 6: Middle-size dragon

    First at 1:04

Hands on your shoulders and flap your elbows like wings. Hop on one foot, then on two (little ones can hop on two feet the whole time). Then open your hands to the screen: "How about you?"

  7. Everyone with arms raised high in a big V shape, the Dragon in the middle.
Verse 3: giant dragons, arms up in a big V. (1:31 in the video)

    Step 7: Giant dragon

    First at 1:31

Arms out wide and big stomps, rocking side to side. Raise your arms in a big V and give your biggest roar. Shake the sky!

  8. Children and the Dragon sitting curled up, eyes closed, hands under their cheeks.
The bridge: curl up small and freeze. (1:40 in the video)

Step 8: Sleepy freeze, then wake up!

    First at 1:39

Yawn, sit down and curl up small with your hands under your cheek. On "Shh… shh… shh…" freeze completely. On "Wake up, dragons!" jump up with claws high.

Questions parents ask

What age is Ra-Ta-Ta-Roar! for?

It is made for ages 2 to 8. Toddlers copy the knee pats and the roar; older children enjoy the size changes and the freeze. Hopping on one foot is optional for two- and three-year-olds.

Can children do the dragon dance sitting down?

Yes. Every move has a seated version: drum on your knees or the floor, flap your arms, swish from the waist and stomp your feet in place. It works on a classroom carpet or in a wheelchair.

Is it a good brain break for the classroom?

It was designed as one. The chorus repeats four times with the same moves, the verses build energy, and the sleepy freeze in the middle brings everyone back to stillness before the big finish.

Does the dragon breathe fire?

No. The Dragon never uses fire. The roar is friendly, with a round open mouth and no teeth showing.
