How we meet them
Standing at the top of the field, already there, much bigger and much quieter than anybody expected.
Personality
Not menacing, simply real. She never looks at the boy once. She is interested in the sheep and nothing else, and that indifference is the frightening part.
What they want
She is hungry, and there are sheep.
How they change
Appears, takes what she came for, and leaves. She is weather, not a villain.
How they speak
Nothing whatsoever. She is the only major character in the collection with no dialogue at all.
How the story treats them
The story refuses to make her wicked. She is hungry, there are sheep in front of her, and she never looks at the boy once.
One surprising thing
She does not react to the boy's shouting in any way. The indifference is deliberate, and it is the most frightening thing on the hill.
If they were real today
She would be the thing that actually goes wrong while everybody is busy worrying about something else.
Key moments
She never looked at him
Standing at the top of the field entirely still, watching the sheep and not the boy. The indifference is the frightening part.
She took her time
There was no hurry in any of it, because nothing on that hillside was going to stop her and she seemed to know it.
