Listen
There is no recording yet. The words are all here, and the tune is simpler than it looks: G - C - D - G at 132 beats per minute.
How to lead it
The grown-up sings everything except the last word. Point at the child on the gap and wait. Waiting is the whole game. When they run out, let them invent a new animal and you find the rhyme.
Lyrics
The words in brackets are the child's. Leave the gap and wait.
Out in the field where the tall grass grows, Out in the field where the tall grass grows, Something went by and I don't suppose You'd believe me if I told you so. Did you ever see a BEE With a wobbly, wobbly ___ ? (KNEE!) Did you ever see a GOAT In a stripy, stripy ___ ? (COAT!) Out in the field where the tall grass grows, Out in the field where the tall grass grows. Did you ever see a SNAIL With a bucket and a ___ ? (PAIL!) Did you ever see a FOX In a pair of woolly ___ ? (SOCKS!) Out in the field where the tall grass grows, Out in the field where the tall grass grows. Did you ever see a HEN With a great big fountain ___ ? (PEN!) Did you ever see a MOUSE Build a teeny tiny ___ ? (HOUSE!) Out in the field where the tall grass grows, Out in the field where the tall grass grows, Something went by on its tippy toes, And where it went, well — nobody knows!
